Mary O’Leary, Consultant with Ascellon Corporation in Landover, MD, Patient Advocate in St. Helena, CA, and Consultant for the World Health Organization was recently selected as Top Healthcare Consultant of the Year for 2020 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for her outstanding leadership and dedication to the Healthcare Industry.

Inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, as only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations and contributions to their communities.  All honorees are invited to attend the IAOTP’s annual award gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements.

With over five decades of professional experience as a Nurse, Patient Advocate and Consultant, Ms. O’Leary has certainly proven herself as an extraordinary professional and expert in the field.  She is a dynamic, results-driven leader who has demonstrated success in every role she has ever held. She was the Administrative Director for the Department of Psychiatry and Director of Psychiatric and Respite Care in Nursing at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center. Ms. O’Leary currently serves as a Patient Advocate in St. Helena, CA and is the Consultant for the Ascellon Corporation in Landover, MD.

Before embarking on her current career path, Ms. O’Leary earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Villanova University in 1963, a Master of Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois in 1979 and completed post-graduate coursework at the National College of Education. 

Her impressive repertoire of prior roles began when she was a Staff Nurse in the Psychiatry Department at the Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital in 1963. Ms. O’Leary was quickly promoted to Coordinator of In-Patient Child Psychiatry one year later, which set the tone for her advancement within the healthcare industry over the course of the next few decades. She succeeded as an Assistant Head Nurse at the Veterans Research Hospital, Instructor in the Cooperative Health Occupations Assistants Program of the Chicago Board of Education, Director of Nursing Education, Evaluation and Research and Director of Psychiatric Services at the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center, Vice President of Clinical Services at Grant Hospital and Patient Care Director at the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. Ms. O’Leary also served as Chief Nursing Officer at St. Helena Hospital and as a Patient Advocate at the Good Medicine Consult and Advocacy. 

Throughout her remarkable career, Ms. O’Leary has received many awards, accolades and has been recognized in publications and magazines worldwide for her outstanding leadership roles and commitment to the Healthcare Industry. For 2020, she is being considered for a Front Cover feature in T.I.P. (Top Industry Professional) Magazine and is being honored as Top Healthcare Consultant of the Year by the International l Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). Mary was inducted as a Janseen Clinical Scholar, during the Ninth Annual U.S. Psychiatric and Mental Health Congress in 1996. She has also been recognized worldwide as a recipient for many Marquis Who’s Who awards including the Humanitarian Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Aside from her successful career, Ms. O’Leary has been a contributing author to numerous medical articles and professional journals. She is a sought-after lecturer, who remains active within her community through various volunteer positions. Her notable professional standings and affiliations include the American Organization of Nursing Executives (AONE), the National League for Nursing and the Illinois Society of Nursing Administrators. In the past, she has served as a member of the Program Committee of the Midwest Alliance of Nursing and as the Chair of the Program Committee of the Illinois League of Nursing. Currently, Ms. O’Leary is on the Honoring Choices Napa Valley Board, which helps professionals and lay people complete their Advance Care Directives and she volunteers at the Cameo Movie Theater in St. Helena, which offers varying programs for students.

Looking back, Ms. O’Leary attributes her success to her desire for learning, her persistence and mentors with whom she has been honored to collaborate with. She has a true passion for her service and high integrity in all of her professional and personal endeavors. When not working, she enjoys spending time with family, traveling, interior decorating, art, music, tennis, rock climbing and bocce ball.  For the future, she hopes to influence students and professionals within the healthcare industry to further their education and guide them towards optimal health.
